Not sure what that RTL does as I have amended it and switched back and cannot see any difference ?

you turn on RTL and the menu will be masked

Thanks for your help I think I was trying to be too complex. have set it as a sidebar menu module and it seems to work now.

Will play with it a bit more and again Thanks
